The starting point
A PE versus PVC cling film comparison needs more than the material name. Specify the roll width, usable length, supply format, intended food-contact conditions and destination. Match supporting documents to the selected product; the PE production licence shown by 4Season does not cover PVC film.
Compare the catalogue formats on the same basis.
| Range | Listed width | Listed length | Supply format |
|---|---|---|---|
| PE boxed | 30 cm | 20, 30, 50 or 100 m | One roll per box |
| PE wrapped roll | 30 cm | 30, 50 or 100 m | Individual roll |
| PVC roll | 30, 35, 40 or 45 cm | 400 yd = 365.76 m | Individual roll |
These are separate catalogue options, not a claim that one material is universally better. Start with the working width and dispensing arrangement you need. For example, compare the boxed PE reference 0009ywh with the PVC range reference 0580yw only after accounting for their very different lengths and packaging.
The PVC photograph is shared across the range. Its printed markings do not verify every SKU’s width and length. Use the catalogue fields and request the selected product’s current specification and artwork.
Convert yards before comparing roll prices.
A 400-yard roll is 365.76 metres because one yard is 0.9144 metres. It is not a 400-metre roll. Keep the original unit in the purchase specification and add the conversion beside it so the supplier and buyer are quoting the same length.
For an area comparison, nominal area in square metres equals width in metres multiplied by roll length in metres. A 30 cm × 400 yd reference therefore represents 0.30 × 365.76 = 109.728 m². A 30 cm × 30 m reference represents 9 m². These calculations use catalogue dimensions; they do not measure delivered film, thickness, strength or waste during use.
Price per square metre can help explain a size difference. It does not make products equivalent when formulation, thickness, core, dispenser or packaging differs.
Name the food-contact conditions before asking for documents.
Tell the supplier the destination country, food types, expected contact time and temperature. State whether the film will touch food directly and whether refrigeration, freezing or heating is intended. Ask for the product-specific instructions and supporting documentation for that use.
For the US market, FDA explains that food-contact material status depends on its components and applicable authorizations. An effective Food Contact Substance Notification is specific to the identified manufacturer, substance and conditions of use. A general “FDA approved material” phrase is therefore not a substitute for checking the proposed product and application.
This checklist does not determine compliance for a particular order. Have the buyer’s responsible compliance specialist assess the supplied evidence for the destination and intended use.
Check what the available documents actually cover.
The Chinese production-licence attachment supplied to 4Season names PE cling film, PE food storage bags and PE gloves. PVC film is outside that listed scope. The supplied ISO 9001 certificate concerns a quality management system; it is not a food-contact approval for every catalogue item.
Ask for complete, current documents that identify the manufacturer and relevant product or formulation. A test-report cover does not show the tested conditions or outcome. Review the factory document scope and ask for the applicable full report before relying on a claim.
Finish with a roll and packing specification.
Include material, width, length and unit, requested thickness, core requirements, boxed or wrapped presentation, rolls per carton and total rolls. If a cutter or dispenser is required, name it explicitly and ask the supplier to confirm whether it is included.
Review the eleven cling-film references, then request a quotation for the selected roll format. Ask for the quotation unit and packing conversion to be written out; a minimum expressed only as “pieces” is ambiguous for film.
